Hand-Carved Wood Signs
& Monuments

Using the traditional method of shaping and carving details into the wood with hand gouges and carving knives to craft landscape monument scenes and select commissions for businesses and homes

HOW THEY ARE MADE:

Using gouges (similar to chisels) and a wooden mallet, the design is slowly brought out by carving bits of the wood away. Each gouge mark is visible, creating a scalloped look that allows the text and graphical element to jump off the sign.

After the elements are roughed out, smaller gouges that are more detail-oriented are used to create greater relief, visual contrast, and to begin to smooth out the carving marks where needed.

After extensive sanding and re-detailing with the gouges, the sign moves to the painting and finishing stage, which takes almost as long as carving.
